Chronological age is the interval between a date of birth and a reference date. That is the whole definition. It needs no assumptions about health, development, lifestyle or anything else, which is why two people calculating it from the same dates always agree.

That reproducibility is the point. It is why chronological age is what appears on legal documents, what determines school cohorts, what governs eligibility thresholds, and what norm-referenced assessments use to select a comparison group. Anything that varies by who is doing the measuring cannot serve those purposes.

The other ages, and what they claim

Biological or metabolic age estimates how a body compares to population averages, usually from a handful of lifestyle or physiological inputs. It is a model output, not a measurement, and it changes when the model changes. Developmental age describes skills relative to typical patterns and is assessed, not calculated. Corrected age adjusts chronological age for prematurity.

None of these replaces chronological age, and none is interchangeable with the others. A tool on this site that reports a lifestyle-adjusted age is labelled as an educational estimate for exactly this reason — it is answering a different question, less precisely, and it says so.

Where the reference date does the work

Because age is elapsed time, it is only true on one date. "Aged 8" is incomplete information; "aged 8 years 6 months on 16 August 2026" is a fact that can be checked years later.

In records this matters more than the precision of the number. An age recorded without its reference date decays silently — it stays in the file looking correct while becoming steadily wronger, and there is nothing in the value itself to signal it has gone stale.

Precision versus usefulness

Chronological age can be stated to the day, but that does not mean the day-level figure is always the useful one. For a conversation, whole years are fine. For a school cutoff, the exact date matters. For a developmental assessment, years, months and days are usually required.

Match the precision to the decision rather than defaulting to the most granular available. What should not vary is the underlying calculation — calculate exactly, then present at whatever resolution the purpose calls for, and keep the exact value in the record.
