Your average is not constant

A single daily figure has to stand in for childhood, adolescence, working life and retirement, and those differ enormously. Someone in their thirties today grew up with far less screen access than a child does now, so applying a current average across their whole life substantially overstates the total.

If you want a figure that means something, calculate it in segments — a different rate for each life stage — and add them. It is more work and considerably more honest, and the segmented total is often much lower than the single-rate estimate.

What counts as screen time

The definition is doing a lot of quiet work. Does a work monitor count alongside a phone? Does a television playing in the background count? Do two devices used simultaneously count once or twice? Device-reported figures and self-reported figures often disagree by a wide margin for exactly these reasons.

Write down your definition before you calculate. Without it the number cannot be compared with anyone else's, or with your own figure from six months ago.

Using the figure well

These calculations are most useful as a way of making a rate visible. "Four hours a day" is easy to dismiss; "more than five years of my life so far" is harder to. That reframing is the legitimate value here.

What the figure cannot do is support a claim about health, attention or wellbeing. Those are research questions with genuinely contested answers, and a multiplication does not contribute to them. Present the total as an illustration, always with the assumed rate alongside it, and resist the temptation to attach conclusions it cannot carry.

For a birth date of 18 November 1994 measured on 16 August 2026, that is 11,594 days lived. At four hours a day the estimate is about 1,932 days on screens; at three hours it is 1,449; at five hours it is 2,415.
