What you get

How the inclusive count works

Enter a start date, an end date and a counting convention: both end dates, the start only, the end only, or neither. The calculator measures the elapsed days between the two dates, then adds one day when both ends are counted, or subtracts one when neither is.

★Method

Elapsed days, adjusted by the convention

The base figure is the ordinary date difference — the number of midnights crossed. Counting both the first and the last day adds one; counting neither removes one; counting only one end leaves the elapsed figure unchanged.

◎Example

Worked example

From 1 January to 31 January 2026 the elapsed interval is 30 days. Counting both ends gives 31 counted days, counting one end gives 30, and counting neither gives 29.

⌁Limits

Same-day spans

When the start and end dates are the same day, the elapsed interval is zero: counting both ends gives 1 day and counting neither gives 0 — the count never goes below zero. The order of the two dates does not matter; the span is always measured as a positive length.

How it works

One calculation, with the rule visible

This tool keeps the input dates, counting convention and result together so the answer can be checked.

1

Start date

Enter the first date of the span; the order of the two dates does not matter — the span is always measured as a positive length.

2

End date

Enter the last date of the span. The base figure is the elapsed days between the two dates — the number of midnights crossed.

3

Counting convention

Choose which ends count: Both, Start, End or Neither. Counting both ends adds one day to the elapsed figure, counting neither subtracts one, and counting only one end leaves it unchanged.

4

Read the counted days

1 to 31 January 2026 is 30 elapsed days, so Both gives 31 counted days, one end gives 30 and Neither gives 29. On a same-day span, counting both ends gives 1 day and the count never goes below zero.

Method & limits

What this result means

A useful answer includes both the number and its assumptions.

Calculation method

Inclusive Date Count Calculator calculates the number of calendar days with explicit start- and end-date inclusion using Gregorian calendar arithmetic. Dates are treated as date-only values, avoiding accidental time-of-day and daylight-saving shifts.

Important: Weekend, holiday, legal, medical, financial, school or workplace policies are included only when the tool explicitly asks for them. Confirm official decisions with the responsible authority.

Common checks

  • Confirm day, month and year before calculating.
  • Check whether endpoints should be included.
  • Review February 29 and month-end cases.
  • Save the reference date with the result.
Common questions

Inclusive Date Count Calculator FAQ

Answers about method, boundaries and edge cases.

What is the difference between elapsed days and counted days?

Elapsed days are the ordinary date difference (midnights crossed). Counted days adjust that figure by your convention: counting both ends adds one, counting neither subtracts one, counting one end leaves it unchanged.

How many days are counted from 1 to 31 January 2026?

30 elapsed days; Both gives 31 counted days, one end gives 30, Neither gives 29.

What happens when the start and end dates are the same day?

The elapsed interval is zero: counting both ends gives 1 day and counting neither gives 0 — the count never goes below zero.

Does the order of the two dates matter?

No. The span is always measured as a positive length.

What do the Both, Start, End and Neither options mean?

Which ends of the span count: both the first and last day, only the start, only the end, or neither.
