Maternity Leave Calculator

When does your maternity leave start, when does it end, and when do you return to work? Pick your category under India’s Maternity Benefit Act — 26 weeks for the first two children, 12 weeks for the third child onwards and for adopting or commissioning mothers — and enter your leave start date. The calculator gives the full leave period and the return-to-work date, and splits the leave around your due date when you provide one.

Calculate Your Maternity Leave

Pick your category and your leave start date — the calculator gives the end date and your return to work.

Step 1 — Your category

Durations are those in the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, as amended in 2017.

Step 2 — Your dates

Up to 8 weeks of the leave may be taken before the expected delivery date. If you know your due date, enter it below and the calculator suggests a start date 8 weeks earlier.

Planning a pregnancy around work means planning dates: when to stop, how long the leave runs, and the exact day you are due back. The Act fixes the lengths, but turning a length in weeks into calendar dates — across month ends, and around a due date — is where the arithmetic slips. This page does that arithmetic, and states the rules it uses, so the dates can be checked against your employer’s letter.

  • Leave period — start and end dates for your category’s statutory length.
  • Return-to-work date — the day after the leave ends, stated plainly.
  • Split around the due date — how many days fall before and after delivery, when a due date is given.
  • 8-week pre-delivery note — the Act allows up to 8 weeks of the leave before the expected delivery.

Eligibility: the woman must have worked at least 80 days in the 12 months before the expected delivery. Leave is paid at the average daily wage.

1. What Is a Maternity Leave Calculator?

A maternity leave calculator turns a statutory leave length in weeks into calendar dates: the day the leave starts, the day it ends, and the day the mother returns to work. In India those lengths come from the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, as amended in 2017 — 26 weeks for the first two children, and 12 weeks for the third child onwards and for adopting or commissioning mothers.

The dates matter beyond the calendar: handover planning, salary during leave (paid at the average daily wage), and the return date all run from them. This calculator gives all three dates from two inputs, and splits the leave around the due date when one is provided, so the pre- and post-delivery portions are visible.

Everything runs in your browser — your dates and category are never sent anywhere.

2. How to Use This Calculator

Pick your category: first or second child (26 weeks), third child or later (12 weeks), or adopting or commissioning mother (12 weeks from the date of receiving the child). Then enter your leave start date — the first day you will be on leave.

The expected due date is optional. If you give it, the calculator also reports how many days of the leave fall before the due date and how many after it, and — as a planning hint — the start date 8 weeks before the due date, which is the earliest the pre-delivery portion may begin under the Act.

Select Calculate Leave Dates and the results panel shows the return-to-work date as the headline, with the leave period, the total leave in weeks and days, and the pre/post-delivery split. Reset clears all inputs; Copy result puts a one-line summary on your clipboard.

3. How the Leave Dates Are Calculated

The leave length is converted to days: 26 weeks = 182 days and 12 weeks = 84 days. The leave period runs from the start date for that many days, so the last day of leave is start + days − 1, and the return-to-work date is start + days — the day after the leave ends. Counting this way, a leave that starts on a Monday ends on a Sunday 26 weeks later and returns on the following Monday.

The Act allows up to 8 weeks (56 days) of the leave to be taken before the expected date of delivery; the remainder falls after it. When a due date is provided, the calculator reports the actual split for the chosen start date: days from the start date to the due date, and days from the due date to the return date.

For adopting and commissioning mothers, the 12 weeks run from the date the child is handed over — enter that date as the leave start date, and the calculator gives the matching end and return dates.

4. Worked Examples

Example 1 — first child, due date known. Due date 26 February 2027, leave starting 8 weeks earlier on 1 January 2027, first child (26 weeks = 182 days). The leave period is 1 January 2027 to 1 July 2027, and the return-to-work date is 2 July 2027. Of the leave, 56 days fall before the due date and 126 days after it.

Example 2 — third child. Leave starting 1 March 2027, third child (12 weeks = 84 days). The leave period is 1 March 2027 to 23 May 2027, and the return-to-work date is 24 May 2027.

Example 3 — the 8-week rule. Due date 26 February 2027 minus 56 days is 1 January 2027 — the earliest start date for the pre-delivery portion. Starting later is allowed; the total leave stays 26 weeks, and the split simply shifts toward the post-delivery side.

5. Limits & Notes

This calculator implements the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, as amended in 2017, for India. Maternity leave rules in other countries are different, and this tool should not be used for employment outside India. Even within India, an employer’s policy or an agreement can be more generous than the Act — the Act sets the minimum.

Eligibility is not computed: the Act requires the woman to have worked at least 80 days in the 12 months immediately preceding the expected delivery, and establishments must meet the Act’s coverage conditions. If either is in doubt, confirm with the employer before relying on the dates.

The calculator also does not handle medical extensions: the Act provides for additional leave on medical advice and for miscarriage and related cases under separate provisions, which need individual advice rather than a date calculator.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

How long is maternity leave in India?

26 weeks for the first two children, and 12 weeks for the third child onwards, under the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, as amended in 2017. Adopting and commissioning mothers receive 12 weeks from the date of receiving the child.

Who qualifies for maternity leave?

A woman who has worked at least 80 days in the 12 months immediately preceding her expected date of delivery, in an establishment covered by the Act.

When can maternity leave start?

Up to 8 weeks (56 days) of the leave may be taken before the expected delivery date; the rest falls after delivery. The total length does not change with the start date.

When do I return to work?

The day after the leave ends: leave start date plus the leave length in days. For a 26-week leave starting 1 January 2027, the return date is 2 July 2027.

Is maternity leave paid?

Yes. The Act provides for maternity benefit at the rate of the average daily wage for the period of absence, subject to the eligibility conditions.

Is the leave longer for twins?

No. The Act grants 26 weeks for the first two children regardless of whether the delivery is single or multiple; there is no additional leave for twins under the Act itself.

What about adopting a child?

A woman who legally adopts a child below the age of three months, and a commissioning mother, are entitled to 12 weeks of leave from the date the child is handed over.

Can leave be split around delivery?

Yes, within the total: up to 8 weeks before the expected delivery and the remainder after. This calculator shows the split for any start date you choose.

Does this apply outside India?

No. This calculator implements India’s Maternity Benefit Act. Other countries have different maternity leave rules, and this tool should not be used for employment outside India.

What if I need more leave for medical reasons?

The Act provides separately for additional leave on medical advice and for miscarriage and related cases. Those provisions need individual advice and are not computed by this calculator.

Is this calculator free, and are my dates private?

Yes, it is free, and it runs entirely in your browser. Your dates and category are never sent to a server or stored anywhere.

8. Methodology & Data Integrity

Durations (26 weeks, 12 weeks, 8-week pre-delivery limit, 80-day eligibility condition) are from the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, as amended by the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017. Leave is counted in calendar days: 26 weeks = 182 days, 12 weeks = 84 days; the return date is the day after the leave period ends.

Worked examples on this page were produced by the calculator’s own engine: 1 January 2027 + 182 days = return 2 July 2027 (56 days before a 26 February 2027 due date, 126 after); 1 March 2027 + 84 days = return 24 May 2027; 26 February 2027 minus 56 days = 1 January 2027.

This tool gives statutory dates for the inputs entered. It is not legal advice, and it does not judge eligibility, coverage, employer-policy variations, or medical extensions. Where those apply, the dates should be confirmed with the employer.
