The one input that changes everything

A fiscal quarter is defined by a single decision: which month the financial year begins. Once that is fixed, quarters are simply the first, second, third and fourth three-month blocks from that point. Everything that feels confusing about fiscal quarters traces back to people working from different start months without realising it.

Common starts include January (matching the calendar), April (the UK public sector, India, Japan and many others), July (Australia and New Zealand) and October (the US federal government). Individual companies choose their own — retailers often end their year after the holiday season, and universities often align with the academic year.

Reading a fiscal year label

When the fiscal year does not start in January it spans two calendar years, and different organisations label that span differently. Some name the year by its start ("FY2026" beginning April 2026), some by its end ("FY2026" ending March 2026). Both conventions are in active use and neither is wrong.

The practical defence is to never trust a bare label. "FY26 Q2" is not a date range until you know both the start month and the labelling convention. Written as "1 July – 30 September 2026", it is unambiguous to anyone. When you publish a figure, publish the date range beside the label at least once.

Quarter boundaries and the end-of-month problem

Quarter boundaries always land on month boundaries, which means the last day of a quarter varies: 31 March, 30 June, 30 September, 31 December for a calendar year, and shifted equivalents otherwise. February quarters end on the 28th or 29th depending on the year.

This is why quarter-end dates should be derived, not typed. A hard-coded 30 June will be right until the year a leap day or a policy change moves it, and a hard-coded 28 February will be wrong every fourth year. Calculate the last day of the third month of the quarter and let the calendar handle the rest.

Comparing across organisations

Comparing quarterly figures between organisations with different fiscal years is a common analytical trap. Two companies both reporting "Q2" may be describing periods that do not overlap at all, and seasonal businesses will look wildly different purely because of where their year boundary sits.

Where a genuine comparison is needed, normalise to calendar quarters or to explicit date ranges before comparing anything. State clearly when you have done so, because a normalised figure will not match the company's own published number.

Worked example

For an organisation whose fiscal year starts in April, the date 16 August 2026 falls in Q2 — the block running 1 July to 30 September 2026 — because April–June is Q1. On a calendar fiscal year the same date is in Q3. Same day, different quarter, and both are correct within their own system.

Try it with the dates in front of you. Where the answer sits close to a threshold, treat that as a prompt to check the rule rather than to conclude.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming Q1 means January to March. It only does when the fiscal year starts in January. Confirm the start month before interpreting any quarter label.
  • Hard-coding quarter end dates. Derive them from the quarter's final month so month length and leap years are handled automatically.
  • Comparing quarters across different fiscal calendars. Normalise to explicit date ranges first, and say that you have.

Frequently asked questions

Why do organisations choose non-January year starts?

Usually to align the reporting year with a natural business cycle — a harvest, an academic year, a retail season or a government appropriation cycle.

Can a fiscal year be something other than twelve months?

Transitional years can be shorter or longer when an organisation changes its year end. These are reported as stub periods and are not comparable to normal years.

Is a 4-4-5 calendar the same thing?

No. A 4-4-5 calendar divides quarters into week blocks so each quarter has the same number of weeks, which means quarter boundaries do not fall on month ends.
